kyorugi tkd club

mr brian johnston The Kyorugi Tae Kwon Do Club was formed in 1997 at the Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome, under the instruction of Mr Brian Johnston (junior) and with help from his father Mr Johnston (senior). The club consisted of only one class every Saturday from 10am to 11am and only catered for children.

As the club gradually began to grow over the years more classes where added catering for both children and adults, this caused the teaching syllabus of the club to be changed. The children are encouraged to practice the sports side of Tae Kwon Do and take part in competitions for both sparring and patterns, the adults are shown self-defence techniques and use Tea Kwon Do as a means of keeping themselves fit.

The club now runs four classes a week including a sparring class in which the digital scoring system Ringmaster is used along with W.T.F competition mats (inter locking mats).  This allows competitors to train for competition and become use to a competition atmosphere. The Kyorugi Tae Kwon Do club got its name due to the emphasis on the sports aspect of the art, so competition training plays a big role in the training syllabus of the classes. The word Kyorugi roughly translates into “Sparring” or “Fighting”, so the name Kyorugi Tae Kwon Do translates as “The way of hand and foot sparring/fighting”.

Mr Johnston (junior) now a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do has gained a wealth of experience and qualifications over the years to improve and promote his club and teaching career. With trips to Korea training under many masters and qualifications gained in both Sports coaching and Sports performance. He is now studying a two-year Sports therapy and rehabilitation course to further his knowledge in the field of sports and to maintain safe training and teaching methods for his students, and minimise the risk of injury to his competitors.
